“Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let the sea resound, and all that is in it. Let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them; let all the trees of the forest sing for joy.” (Psalm 96:11-12)
Plitvice Lakes is one of the most beautiful places on earth.... like a gem dropped from the treasure chest of Heaven, left on earth to remind us what Eden was like before mankind sinned, and a hint of what awaits us in Heaven when we repent.
There are literally dozens of waterfalls. From the soft murmurings of crystal clear waters cascading over mossy pebbles, to the roar of the waterfalls, crashing 30 metres into the lake below, the view is breathtaking. The waters reflect the sky in its various hues, sapphire, turquoise and emerald. Walk a little deeper into the forest and you'll see trees in the most brilliant green. Sunlight pours through the lush canopy to blanket a verdant carpet, sprinkled with flowers in spring, blooming in an explosion of colours.
Croatia is one of the most beautiful countries on earth, and Plitvice Lakes is one of her highlights. My wife and I spent a whole day walking the trails of the national park, and our only regret was not squeezing another day into our schedule to explore more of the UNESCO World Heritage site. We gave up taking photographs after a while because there was literally something Instagram worthy everywhere we turned. Oh yes, there was a second regret; we only had our iPhones with us, and not a proper DSLR.
As we soaked up the beauty and purity that surrounded us, we could only marvel at the creative genius of God. From the raw power of rushing waters, to the subtle tints on a delicate petal, we felt His passion, and heard His poetry. We indulged in the song that God sang to us through His artistry, and we felt His affection.
As I mused on God’s love, I wondered how Adam and Eve could feel discontent in the midst of such magnificence, and sympathised with the regret they must have felt when they lost it. I also felt overwhelmed with a sense of gratitude as I thought about how much God wants us all back with Him, in the glorious perfection of Heaven.
Dearest Lord, thank you for your beauty and your incredible love.
