Psalm 138 - God Will Honour His Name & Complete His Work
Updated: Aug 26, 2019
Psalm 138 NLT
I give you thanks, O LORD, with all my heart; I will sing your praises before the gods.
I bow before your holy Temple as I worship. I praise your name for your unfailing love and faithfulness; for your promises are backed by all the honour of your name.
As soon as I pray, you answer me; you encourage me by giving me strength.
Every king in all the earth will thank you, LORD, for all of them will hear your words.
Yes, they will sing about the LORD's ways, for the glory of the LORD is very great.
Though the LORD is great, He cares for the humble, but He keeps His distance from the proud.
Though I am surrounded by troubles, you will protect me from the anger of my enemies. You reach out your hand, and the power of your right hand saves me.
The LORD will work out His plans for my life - for your faithful love, O LORD, endures forever. Don't abandon me, for you made me.
Do we fear that God will not fulfil His plan, and that what He has said will not come true? Do we lose hope in God because of that? Are we afraid that some of the promises we’ve read in the Bible are not going to happen for us? If we feel uncertain about God’s Word, how we live our life will become uncertain too.
Verse 2 is the cornerstone of this Psalm. “I praise your name for your unfailing love and faithfulness; for your promises are backed by all the honour of your name.” God’s promises are backed by the honour of God’s name. God’s cheque will NOT bounce!
God has almost 1,000 different names in the Bible. These names are references to God’s characteristics and nature. When God owns that name, God will live up to that name because of who He is.
Some of the following names of God may not be mentioned in the verses specifically, but I believe they might probably be names that David thought of as he wrote Psalm 138:
Yahweh means “The Lord”. Yahweh is derived from the Hebrew word for “I AM,” it is the proper name of the divine person, coming from the verb which means “exist,” “be.”
Elohim means “God”. This name refers to God’s incredible power and might. He is the One and only God.
El Elyon means “God Most High”. It is a name used throughout the Old Testament revealing God is above all gods, that nothing in life is more sacred. He is indeed the Lord Most High, the One who reigns supreme.
Abba means “Daddy, Father”. Abba is the most intimate form of God’s name, showing us His character as our loving daddy. He is the One who can be fully trusted, the One we can lean on, the One who cares about all that concerns us. He protects us.
Yahweh Shalom means “The Lord Is Peace”.
Jehovah Rapha means "Healer, the Lord who heals you".
El Roi means “The God Who Sees”. He is the one who chases after us, who follows us with goodness. He is the one who sees us when we feel lonely, all on our own, or when we just need the reminder that God is close. The name El Roi says to us that God is watching over all of us, that He sees the affairs of people, and knows when we feel lost and unloved.
Yahweh Yireh means “The Lord Will Provide”.
How does knowing and understanding that all the promises of God will be fulfilled FOR US help us in our faith and destiny? David felt excited and awesome. He made an abundance of thanksgiving to God because of the assurance of God, that He is who He is!
Above all, let’s remember God's name, Yahweh, which means, "I AM". Who? Yahweh! God is the Boss of the universe for He is the Creator. When we see injustice, remember that God is peace. When we are belittled, remember that God is our daddy. When we are in trouble, remember the God who sees. When we are hurt, let God heal, because that's His name. Don't try to be a self-healer or look to someone else for healing. If we have a friend who is in spiritual trouble, do we point him to God and teach him about God's name? Let God do his work, and let us be His messenger, bringing His name to others and glorifying His Holy Name.
We can give thanks to God with ALL our hearts! We can sing His “praises before the gods”, because no one is better that God!
“God cares for the humble” and “keeps His distance from the proud”. So we can be assured that if we are humble to God, He is with us. We have to make sure, we aren’t proud towards God.
When we are “surrounded by troubles”, God will protect us “from the anger of my (our) enemies”. Think of all the troubles that have surrounded us before and look at how are we now? Aren’t we protected by God? God’s power will save us. He is all-powerful. “The LORD will work out His plans for my (our) life”, let us have faith in God’s plan, His plan is guaranteed by His name. God will honour His Name.
