A Little Bird Told Me

Ng Wee Keong

When words are many, sin is not absent, but he who holds his tongue is wise. (Proverbs 10:19)

As a dream comes when there are many cares, so the speech of a fool when there are many words. (Ecclesiastes 5:3)

I have been tweeting some of my Quiet Time readings on the social media platform Twitter. As some of us may know, a tweet was only 140 characters in length originally. This was because an SMS back in the day only allowed 160 characters and that was mainly how tweets were sent. Twitter reserved 20 characters for user name and the rest was history. However since the end of 2017, the company with a logo of a bird, has doubled it to 280 characters. I find that trying to condense my insights / thoughts / reflections into less than 300 characters (not words!) was a good challenge: one that pushes me to condense all I think into (hopefully) a purer form.

Here are some of my tweets over the last few weeks. I hope it can also help you crystalise your own insights from the bible:

  • “Beware, those who Believe but don’t Behave!” is possibly the theme of Luke 3:7-20. When my Response are more Reflexive than a result of being Reflective, I am not producing fruit in keeping with repentance. JTB was locked up for speak9 the Truth; true to who he was (Editor's note: JTB is short for John the Baptist)

  • Samuel, the perennial king-maker, was reminded by God in 1 Sam 16 to look beneath appearances & focus on the heart. Did he not learn aft choosing Saul (outwardly extraordinary but inwardly egocentric)? Perhaps, but he is human like us. God, w/o weakness, is the only TRUE king-maker.

  • 1 Kgs 18 reminds us that culture (aka groupthink/mob mentality/peer pressure/conformity) without obedience to God MAY be acceptable becoz it is prevalent/common, but pleasing God gives Elijah courage to be countercultural / confront disobedience.

  • As powerful as I think a CHANGED life is, victory in Jesus comes only when I realise mine is an EXCHANGED life. Whether I am giving/selfish, more/less prone to losing my temper, contented/greedy etc, overcoming challenges and character defects is NO easier: Christ must live in me.

  • Psalms 46:10 calls us to be still and trust God, not by giving up in our efforts, but by giving up our control over the outcome. For too long I have eaten stress with breakfast, lunch and dinner.

  • 1 Sam 4:1-10 is the story of the original Raiders of the Lost Ark; the Philistines rallied against the Israelites and raided, and the Ark, which belongs in the Most Holy place & not on the battle field, was captured and lost to the people of God.

  • When I have given my best and it ain’t enuf for men, I ask myself if it’s enuf for my Higher Power. The answer is usually YES and that’s good enuf for ME.

  • When I followed Jesus, he promised that I shall never thirst again. My daily script should therefore be to OVERFLOW with his grace, peace & serenity instead of overworked, overwhelmed & overly anxious.

  • The daily routine of going to God in prayer, read9, journal9 & meditation helps us PROCESS & HEAL from our hurts, disappointments, criticisms received & perceived failures by facing our character defects, partnering wif Him.

  • “All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be” Ps 139:16 reminds me like knots tied btw beads on a string prevents them from sliding, my daily routine anchors me in God w/ clarity & prevent life’s priorities(beads) fr falling apart.
